As a dancer, music is my life.
As a writer, music is my muse.
As a mother, music gives me peace.
I have too many favorites; their songs in parenthesis/others have too many to list: Common (Misunderstood/So Far to Go), The Roots (Dear God), My Morning Jacket (Mahgeetah) Phonte, Lupe Fiasco, Roy Ayers (Sunshine), Nina Simone, Duke Ellington, David Sandborn (Bang Bang), Conya Doss (What I Do For You), Algebra, Anthony David (Spittin Game) and Hamilton (Her Heart), Minnie Ripperton (Adventures in Paradise), The Enhantments (Sunshine!), all Gamble & Huff, all Motown, Sade, Norah Jones, Rachel Yamagata (1963), Joy Denalane (Heaven or Hell), Joss Stone (Governmentalist), Duffy (I'm Scared), roots reggae, Leela James (Soul Food), Erykah Badu (Don't Go Naming..), Prince (I Wanna Be Your Lover), and the list just goes on.... I cannot tolerate the stuff that they call rap and is getting too much airplay. I'm too mellow.
